SATURDAY – Riding on a fruitful season, Shanghai American School Pudong (SAS PD)’s varsity tennis team continued their winning streak at British International School Shanghai (BISS).
The 2019 SISAC tennis tournament gathered four schools from Shanghai – Concordia International School Shanghai (CISS), Yew Chung International School (YCIS), BISS, and SAS PD. Along with several local schools, SISAC also welcomed Suzhou Singapore International School (SSIS).
After last year’s victorious sweep at SISAC and volleyball and baseball’s extraordinary performances the previous week, Pudong’s tennis team was expecting quite a few wins for the day.
However, the team met several roadblocks along the way. Estelle Denker, grade 8, was expected to win the D1 girls singles until fell ill before the semi-finals. Having thrown up three times already, she forfeited her much anticipated match against Chloe Hui, a sophomore. With that, the pressure to bring back the title fell on Chloe, who was still able to impress by coming in as runner-up.
Another challenge was the awkward number of 7 people on the boys’ team. As a result, junior Benny Liang, junior, who normally played doubles, had to play singles against Ludvig Denker, sophomore, and Jaden Mak, CISS sophomore.
BISS also brought in two impressive singles players. Kristian Janci, a BISS student ranking 10 in the Universal Tennis Ranking, was able to beat Ludvig Denker, D1 boys singles defending champion, to the title this year. Cindy Jiang, also from BISS, was an unexpected force to reckon with as she snatched this year’s D1 girls singles title.
Despite the obstacles, the team still raked in 5 trophies by the end of the day, including two D1 singles runner ups, two D1 doubles champions, and one D1 doubles runner-up.
Reflecting on the day and looking forward to the upcoming APAC, Chloe Hui, sophomore, said, “I think we did really well this weekend and hopefully this will carry through to APAC next week.”
