At Lunch Flexi on Friday, January 10th, students gathered in the High School Commons for a screening of Frozen 2. The movie, a long-anticipated sequel of Frozen, was released last November. A voting form had been made available prior to decide on the movie screened.
The Commons was crowded as usual: high schoolers piled on the bean bags, socialized in groups, and worked on various projects and assignments. As the movie began, passing groups of students stopped by to watch small portions of the movie. Some have arrived specifically for the occasion.
“I like the idea of Wind Down Friday,” Zoe Chen ’22 who had voted for the movie selection, said. “It’s good to go with my friends and relax.”
However, in the Commons, she noticed that only some students were watching. “You couldn’t really hear the sound,” she said. “And there were no subtitles.”
Other students voiced different concerns. Kaixin Yan ’23 mentioned the timing of the event.
“I love Frozen 2 and I wanted to go,” she said. “But I had a club.”
Joey Wang ’21, part of the STUCO team that announced the event earlier in the week at Tuesday’s Community Meeting, mentioned some of these issues as well.
“We didn’t realize that the TV was going to be that quiet,” he said. “We’re going to adjust some things. Maybe play silent movies like Tom and Jerry or, outside of TV, put out some board games.”
“We wanted to do Wind Down Fridays because it’s more accessible – a small, routine event that could keep people engaged.”
This coming Friday, he said, they will be handing out dumplings for Chinese New Year.
