I have been having trouble sleeping lately with all the assignments and studying, and it’s affecting my concentration in class and at home. Finals are also approaching, and I am worried I won’t be fully well-rested for each test! What should I do to get better sleep?

Dear Sleep-deprived Student,
My goodness! This issue is undoubtedly alarming and harmful to your mental and physical health!
But do not fret, as there are easy steps you can take to solve your problem!
After awakening from my deep slumber, I have come to appreciate and understand more about sleeping. So, here are some simple tips you can use to increase your sleep and feel refreshed:
- Try to be consistent with your sleep schedule; this means going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on the weekends. This will help your body become accustomed to your sleep schedule, and you will not wake up each morning feeling drowsy!
- Remove electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets from your bedroom when you are in bed. This will immensely facilitate your sleeping, as you will not be tempted to scroll through videos or do work on your devices and will not be distracted by noisy notifications.
- Prioritize your homework, and do not procrastinate! This will allow you to complete your assignments much quicker and give you more valuable time to relax, nap, and sleep.
- Do several daily exercises, including jogging, squats, and jumping jacks. This will not only get you physically active but also let you fall asleep faster and feel more rejuvenated in the morning.
- Avoid consuming caffeine in the evening and limit screen time before bed; drinking a caffeinated beverage will keep you awake for four to six hours, and screens emit blue light, which makes sleeping more difficult for your body. This will help you promptly sleep on time!
If these five tips still don’t work for you (although I highly doubt it since the advice comes from me, the omniscient Askolotl), you might need to consult a doctor or other medical professional.
I hope my guidance will be enough and effective in helping you get better sleep, my sleep-deprived friend. If you have further pressing inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me!
Yours truly,
Askolotl
