La industria de la ropa es demasiado dañina para el medio ambiente. Cada año, 92 millones de toneladas de ropa llegan a los vertederos de acuerdo a “earth.org”, por su nombre en inglés. Ahora, nuestro “Lost and Found” es igual que un vertedero. Muchísima ropa hace una montaña desordenada y sucia, pero toda la escuela se hace de la vista gorda. Este problema tiene repercusiones además del aspecto del “Lost and Found”; es una señal de la pereza e inacción sobre nuestros hábitos de usar y olvidar.
The clothing industry is incredibly harmful to the environment. Annually, 92 million tons of clothes arrive at landfills, and the Lost and Found has inherited a similar role in the PDHS community. An overwhelming quantity of abandoned clothes creates a disorganized, musty mountain, yet we nonetheless ignore it. This problem presents repercussions beyond the accessibility and appearance of the Lost and Found; it signifies our inaction in addressing our unsustainable lifestyle.
Ahora, el “Lost and Found” está en un espacio con poca visibilidad; es muy difícil para buscarla, y no se presenta bien. En nuestra escuela hay cero iniciativas para el reuso de la ropa abandonada, y no sabemos adónde se va. Esto es inaceptable para nuestra escuela que prioriza la sostenibilidad y enseña a los estudiantes sobre los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas. Deberíamos mejorar la sostenibilidad del “Lost and Found” y la transparencia de nuestras iniciativas.
Currently, the Lost and Found is hidden in a space with little visibility: it’s difficult to locate and poorly presented. Furthermore, no initiatives at school address the reuse of abandoned clothes, and we aren’t aware of where they go at the end of each academic year. This is unacceptable for SAS, which preaches principles of sustainability and takes pride in following the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). We must improve the sustainability of our Lost and Found through transparent, organized initiatives.

¿Qué podemos hacer? Primero, podemos hacer una “venta de garaje”, donde nuestra comunidad puede comprar ropa abandonada por un poquito de dinero. La escuela podría donar todas las ganancias de la actividad a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro que están dedicadas a reusar ropa vieja o distribuir a las poblaciones pobres. La escuela también puede donar la ropa restante desde la “venta de garaje” a estas organizaciones. También podemos aumentar el conocimiento y la participación en iniciativas sostenibles existentes en nuestra comunidad.
A potential solution is a garage sale, where community members can purchase lost clothes at a discounted price. The school can then donate all revenue to non-profit organizations dedicated to reusing secondhand clothes or distributing them to marginalized communities. Additionally, remaining clothes can be directly donated to these organizations. The garage sale is also a great opportunity to raise awareness of and increase participation in all sustainable activities at SAS.
Por ejemplo, Roots and Shoots – por su nombre en inglés – es un club que hace varias cosas para la sostenibilidad. Una de estas iniciativas nos enseña cómo hacen pulseras con la ropa vieja. En mi opinión, es una solución buena para extender el uso de la ropa olvidada y enseñar a nuestra comunidad sobre la sostenibilidad.
We should also direct more attention to existing sustainability initiatives in our community. Roots and Shoots, a service club, leads a multitude of initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability, namely teaching students how to make bracelets from old clothes. This is an exemplary way to extend the use of abandoned clothing and teach our community about the diverse ways we can reduce our carbon footprint.
En resumen, deberíamos hacer más para resolver el problema en el “Lost and Found”. Es una gran oportunidad para aplicar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) y enseñar a nuestra comunidad sobre qué podemos hacer con la ropa olvidada. Las soluciones son infinitas. ¡Vamos a cambiar nuestros hábitos!
We must do more to resolve issues stemming from the Lost and Found. It’s a great opportunity to apply the UN SDGs and teach our community about actionable solutions for old clothes. The possibilities are infinite; it’s up to us to change our habits!
